Miss Ewe Playful Pals

by Joanne James12. May 2016 08:05

Today it's time for a new challenge over at Create With Connie and Mary and this week we have a colour combination for you:

This colour combination was rather a challenge this week - all neutrals and not a 'colour' to be seen! After much pondering, I decided to create something fun with my Playful Pals stamp set:

Here's the low-down on today's card:

Baa Baa White Sheep - My sheep is courtesy of the the Playful Pals stamp set: I stamped his wool in Versamark and heat embossed in white, which adds a subtle texture and shine against the Crumb Cake background, before stamping his face separately onto Smoky Slate cardstock and popping it onto a dimensional.

Alphabet Rotary Stamp For a Play on Words I couldn't resist a punny sentiment for the front of my card and the Alphabet Rotary Stamp is the perfect tool for this. I will sure miss this stamp, which is so useful when you need to customise your message.

Neutral Embellishments - I decided to use the Basic Grey as my accent colour to bring some definition to my card and added a small strip of designer series paper from the Neutrals DSP stack, along with some linen thread and a silver metallic button to the bottom of my central panel.

Here is the visual summary of the key products used on today's project for you to pin for easy reference:

You can see all of my 'How To' summaries on my 'How To - Tips and Techniques' Pinterest board in case you've missed any.

This card is headed to the lovely Gail who is currently on sabatical and we missed at our technique class this week, with love and best wishes from myself and the other ladies that were present. Do visit the other Design Team members to see what they did with this week's colours; there's lots of inspiration over on their blogs too!

Enjoy your day and I'll be back tomorrow with another project; until then, happy stampin'!

Hot Pink Picture Perfect Hummingbird Card

by Joanne James10. May 2016 22:00

Good evening everyone! I hope your week has started well. I've had my first technique class of the month yesterday along with both a rounders and cricket match (observing not participating, and both wins!), and a second technique class and this month's Project Life Memory Keeping class today so it's been a busy couple of days. Just time to pop in this evening and share the first of the cards from this month's technique class, featuring the Hummingbird in the 'Picture Perfect' stamp set. I used this week's sketch over at As You See It for my layout:

AYSIChallenge134   SIP One Element Wonder 47 800

I'm also linking up with Stamp Ink Paper again this week, as their challenge is to feature one main element on your project and make it really stand out. The hummingbird is the most tricky stamp in the set to align, but when you get it right is so worth it in terms of the result. Here is my finished card:

Here's the low-down on today's card:

Picture Perfect Hummingbird - 'Picture Perfect' is a multi-step image stamp set, with each of the stamps having two, three or four layers. The hummingbird comes in four pieces; for my bird I stamped my first layer in Bermuda Bay, I stamped the second stamp in Melon Mambo, the third layer in Pacific Point and the fourth and final one in Night of Navy. Whilst it sounds complicated, this set is made from photopolymer which makes lining up the images really straightforward. I find it helpful to use the eye to align the images and use a piercing mat or similar foam pad as a base for your stamping for an even image. I do prefer to stamp my bird in the order that the stamps are numbered and if all else fails, a stamp-a-ma-jig will help you to align the images perfectly.  It is definitely a stamp where positioning improves with practice and I must say my ladies today stamped with amazing results, each producing four perfectly stamped hummingbirds on the first attempt!

Partial Die Cutting using Circle Framelits - I stamped my bird onto a piece of Whisper White and having fussy cut his wing tip by hand, I then cut a partial circle up to the diagonal before adhering behind so that it aligned with my cut away circle on my card base. Circle Framelits are invaluable for this kind of partial diecutting, as you simply roll through the Big Shot to the desired point without cutting the whole way through. I've used this technique with this stamp before here; it adds an interesting detail to an otherwise clean and simple card.

Pop of Pink - Melon Mambo is one of my favourite pinks in the Stampin' Up! colour collections and whilst there is only the smallest amount featured on the throat of my bird, I picked up this colour in both my card base and satin knotted ribbon to give a real pop of colour to my otherwise blue card.

Here's today's visual summary of the key things needed to make today's card for easy reference:

You can see all of my 'How To' summaries on my 'How To - Tips and Techniques' Pinterest board in case you've missed any.

That's all from me today; I have another busy day tomorrow, with my Coffee and Card Drop In Session at Bell of Northampton in Kingsthorpe and I'll also be at the in-store Spring Open Evening at Bells too. you can find full details on the latter here

Hopefully I'll squeeze in time for a quick blog post with another of my Picture Perfect class cards. Until then, happy stampin'!

You're Sublime In Subtles!

by Joanne James8. May 2016 09:00

Apologies for a lack of blog posts these last couple of days. I've plenty of projects made, I've just been away for a couple of days and then had my Crafternoon Tea Home Decor class yesterday at Bell of Northampton in Kingsthorpe. Along with everything else that makes up day-to-day life I've just not managed to find the time to write!

Anyway, today it's Sunday and time for a new challenge over at The Paper Players so I'm back to it! It's the turn of the lovely Jaydee to host our challenge this week and she has a four colour combination for you to play along with:

For my card this week I was inspired to use the flower-filled wheelbarrow from the 'You're Sublime' stamp set as the focal point (hence my rather compliment-filled blog post title today!), incorporating lots of layers as per the current sketch over at The Challenge:

Here's the low-down on today's card:

A Barrow of Flowers - This sweet little wheelbarrow stamp is one of the images in the 'You're Sublime' set that I haven't yet used and I these Spring pastels were perfect to fill my grey barrow. I coloured them using my Stampin' Write markers and added a liberal dose of clear Wink of Stella to my blooms, which adds a lovely sparkle in real life although is, alas, difficult to see in the photo. I then punched out my circle with my 2 1/2" circle punch - I'll miss this one when it retires!

A Subtle Collection of Pastels - I don't use Subtles that often, less so exclusively on a card, unless it's a baby card. These lovely ice-cream colours (there's an idea in itself!) work really well together and this card proves when mixed with a liberal dose of Whisper White they work for flowers too.

Uniformity In Layers - I focused on one each of the challenge colours per layer and kept the pattern the same on each of the DSP layers to create a uniformity to my design. Using a borderless circle for my focal image, white matting and a white seam binding ribbon and bow trim, each element ties together without overwhelming the others.

Here is the visual summary of the key products used on today's project for you to pin for easy reference:

Garden In Bloom Vellum Fronted Card

by Joanne James5. May 2016 08:05

Today it's time for a new challenge over at Create With Connie and Mary and this week we have a sketch for you:

SIP Tic Tac Toe 46 800

For today's card I decided to go floral - take a look:

Here's the low-down on today's card:

English Garden - I am on a quest to use up my retiring papers so I started my card today with a piece of patterned English Garden Designer Series Paper. There are such pretty patterns in this set and I went for a rather busy one, with lots of colour and pattern.

Vellum Soft - I decided to tone down the vibrancy and business of my DSP by overlaying it with a piece of vellum. This softens it and also gave me a surface to stamp my sentiment onto, which allows it to stand out a little more against the pattern of the background. I took my inspiration from some of the samples on page 119 of the current seasonal catalogue where this technique is used to great effect.

Garden In Bloom - I used the 'Garden in Bloom' stamp set for my sentiment and butterfly, layering two colours for my butterfly wings before stamping with the outline stamp. I also added a liberal does of clear Wink of Stella to the finished butterfly for a beautiful sparkle.

Here is the visual summary of the key products used on today's project for you to pin for easy reference:

You can see all of my 'How To' summaries on my 'How To - Tips and Techniques' Pinterest board in case you've missed any.

I also made a second card using the same design but an alternative colourway, which I'm linking up with the team over at Stamp Ink Paper where they have a fun tic-tac-toe board. I've also included a sneak peek product on this one too - check out the thick Melon Mambo baker's twine:

I went across the board, top row - flowers, butterfly, twine - but by coincidence it also fits down the middle too - butterfly, birthday, patterned paper. I think the pink against the navy has a little more 'pop' than the first card, but I like them both; do leave me a comment and let me know which one you prefer!

Do visit the other Design Team members to see what they did with this week's sketch; there's lots of inspiration over on their blogs too!

Enjoy your day and I'll be back tomorrow with another project; until then, happy stampin'!

Picture Perfect Hummmingbird Meets Flowering Flourishes

by Joanne James4. May 2016 19:00

I have had a busy day today with early climbing wall club (for the James Juniors, not me!), a trip to Ikea for a few frames (am I the only one who goes in for 4 things and comes out with 14?!) as well as some preparation for some upcoming classes. One of those classes is using the Picture Perfect stamp set, that also features on my card today for the current Fusion challenge:

I've been busy trying lots of hummingbird colour combinations and when I saw the inspiration photo for the challenge I couldn't resist having a go at this one. Here's my card:

An eclectic mix of elements today - here's the low-down on my card:

Picture Perfect Hummingbird - I stamped the four parts of my hummingbird in Wild Wasabi, Bermuda Bay, Crushed Curry and Basic Grey to get the realistic markings. There is so much fun to be had in trying different colour combinations with this bird and the photopolymer does make it easy to line up with a little practice.

A Flowering Flourish - I decided to add a flowering flourish to mimic the orange blossom of the inspiration photo and having seen this card here on Pinterest I thought the Flowering Flourishes stamp set offered the perfect solution. I inked mine with my Watermelon Wonder, Crushed Curry and Cucumber Crush Stampin' Write markers for added vibrancy.

Borders of Blue - I finished my card with a piece of Bermuda Bay patterned paper from the Cherry On Top DSP stack to frame my scene.

Here is the visual summary of the key products used on today's project for you to pin for easy reference:

You can see all of my 'How To' summaries on my 'How To - Tips and Techniques' Pinterest board in case you've missed any.

This isn't one of my class cards next week but hopefully it will get the ladies that are booked to attend in the mood for some multi-step stamping.

That's all from me today. Back tomorrow with my card for this week's new challenge over at Create With Connie and Mary; until then, happy stampin'!

Merry Moments Plaid CAS Christmas Card

by Joanne James3. May 2016 13:32

Everyone is back to school and work today so the house is quiet once more. I do love a long weekend, but if we had them all the time I guess we wouldn't appreciate them! Now don't worry, I've not gone mad - it's true, I have made a Christmas card today!! Today's card is for a few challenges and Christmas just seemed a good way to go!

The code word at Addicted to CAS is 'Plaid' which always makes me think of Christmas and the sketch over at CAS(E) This Sketch reminded me of ribbon around a gift and I knew it would be a perfect way to feature designer paper on my card yet still allow for lots of white space to suit the Less Is More challenge this week. So that is how Christmas was where I ended up:

So here's the low-down on today's card:

Merry Moments - There are two plaid patterns in the Merry Moments designer series paper collection: one is predominantly Mossy Meadow in colour with a white plaid pattern, the other is the one I used here with a white base and a red, grey and green plaid. I chose this one because although it has more colours in the mix, the white base makes it very light and so it is the perfect base for my CAS card. I aligned the horizontal diagonal of my paper with the open cut space of the sketch, as opposed to the vertical. This creates more cohesion and leads the eye to the sentiment.

A Christmas Sentiment - I chose to use a sentiment from the Embellished Ornaments stamp set for my card. This is a Christmas set that is on carryover and has two of my favourite festive sentiments. I stamped it in Mossy Meadow and added a Perfect Accent, coloured red with my Sharpie, for extra festive feel.

White Space - The sketch layout I've used today really lends itself to 'white space'. I've talked about what makes a clean and simple card before and how to use 'white space' - you can read more about that here. Clean and simple designs do not always have to contain truly 'white' space, but they rarely use pattern in large quantities.

So Christmas as Summer approaches, yet my card uses products that are available in the annual catalogue all year round, so if being prepared is your thing you might want to join me and make one too!

Here's the visual summary of the key supplies used to make this card for you to save for future reference:

You can see all of my 'How To' summaries on my 'How To - Tips and Techniques' Pinterest board in case you've missed any.

That's all from me today; a basket of ironing awaits! I'll be back tomorrow with another project; until then, happy stampin'!

Botanical Builders Happy Birthday

by Joanne James2. May 2016 21:27

I hope you've all had a lovely day and for those of you like me in the UK that you've enjoyed the Bank Holiday. I managed to squeeze in a little gardening before the rain set in this afternoon, at which point I came inside to craft. I made this card for a couple of challenges:

I loved the colour palette and inspiration over at Color Throwdown this week so couldn't resist squeezing in an entry, and I used the new sketch over at Mojo Monday for my layout. Here's my card:

My card was inspired by the Color Throwdown inspiration photo and those amazing cakes and florals - here's the low-down on how I made it:

Stylish Stripes - I used Night of Navy for my card base and adhered a full panel of Night of Navy that I embossed with the Stylish Stripes Textured Impressions Embossing folder to the card front, to echo the diagonal swirls of the cake icing on the photo. This is one of my most used embossing folders and I shall be sad to see it retire at the end of this month; if you haven't got one, snap it up now before it's too late.

Happy Birthday Everyone - The sentiment on my card is from the exclusive hostess set 'Happy Birthday Everyone'. I just love this font and the accompanying finishing sentiments that go with it. I finished the inside of my card with 'to a good friend' as this is where my card is headed as one of mine has a birthday this week.

Botanical Builder Flowers - I never tire of my Botanical Builder framelits and these white and yellow flowers really pop against the navy base of my card. I also added a thin border of Daffodil Delight, cut using my retired large scallop edgelit die.

Here is the visual summary of the key products used on today's project for you to pin for easy reference:

You can see all of my 'How To' summaries on my 'How To - Tips and Techniques' Pinterest board in case you've missed any.

A little extra for you today too: I bought my friend a little something to go with her card and wrapped that in a box made using some Regals designer series paper and made with my Box Buster tool and trusty Envelope Punch Board. Here's a picture:

Isn't that pretty? So nice when you can co-ordinate your card and gift and Stampin' Up! certainly does make that easy for us!

That's all from me today; back tomorrow with another project. until then, happy stampin'!

Let's Get Away Project Life Bicycle Card

by Joanne James1. May 2016 09:00

It's Sunday and time for a new challenge over at The Paper Players! It's the turn of our fearless leader Nance to host our challenge this week and she has a fun theme challenge for you to play along with:

   PPA-298-Apr28

For my card this week I decided to do something a little different and make a card featuring a couple of my Project Life cards. As a family we do a lot of cycling and it often features in my memory keeping, so it was a tough decision to actually part with this one and use it on a card! When I saw Ginger's sketch layout over at Pals Paper Arts this week it was perfect for showcasing an alternative use for my Project Life cards so I 'bit the bullet' and this is what I came up with:

My card is A5, so slightly larger than usual, in order to accommodate my pair of Project Life cards, yet it really was quite straightforward to put together as the Project Life cards do so much of the creative work. That said, there are a few things worth highlighting:

Let's Get Away - The Project Life cards featured on today's card are from the 'Let's Get Away' box set. This set is perfect for documenting your travels, near and far and contains lots of transport, including cars, aeroplanes and bicycles. What's more, this set is retiring so now is the perfect time to pick it up at a bargain price. The card I chose is perfect for today's challenge, with illustration and sentiment all in one. Here's a closer look at it in all its glory:

I mounted it onto a mat of Bermuda Bay for added definition and rounded the corners using my Project Life corner rounder punch. The second large polka dot card is one of the filler cards from the same set.

Bicycle Wheel Background - The stamp that I've used for my background is from the 'Balloon Celebration' set in the seasonal catalogue. I'm not exactly sure what this stamp is intended to be, but to me has always felt like a bicycle wheel - although I've no idea what that has to do with balloons! The open design works well to create interest in the background and incorporate my base and mat colours, which ties it in with my feature cards.

Balloon Trio - As an added detail, I punched out a trio of coloured balloons using the mini balloon punch in the Party Punch Pack (you are so going to snap this up before it retires at the end of this month!) and adhered them over the top of the original ones that decorated the Project Life card, popping the pink one on a dimensional. They are slightly larger than the printed ones, so create a nice overhang and cover completely the printed balloons without any further work being required.

Here is the visual summary of the key products used on today's project for you to pin for easy reference:

I look forward to seeing what you make of our theme this week. We are off to basketball this morning but no hockey today as the season has officially ended. If the weather forecast is correct and we are in for an afternoon of rain, we will be snuggling up on the sofa for a family movie afternoon watching the classic 'The Wizard of Oz'. Rebecca has an audition for a role in a school production of this musical this week, so is keen to 'gen up' on all aspects. Her practising of 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' is coming along nicely - Judy Garland, eat your heart out!

Back tomorrow with another project; until then, happy stampin'!

Choose Happiness Bird Print Card

by Joanne James30. April 2016 09:00

Yay it's the weekend - and the start of a long one for those of us here in the UK as we have a Bank Holiday on Monday! the weather forecast is poor, so I'm thinking this may offer a great opportunity for getting in some quality crafting time. Here's hoping! Today I have a card for a couple of challenges: I used the colours over at Global Design Project and this week's sketch over at Freshly Made Sketches:

This colour palette is quite similar to the one we used over at Create With Connie and Mary this week, yet I was inspired to use it in a completely different way - take a look:

Here's the low-down on today's card:

Offset Frames - My first thought when I saw the FMS sketch was to add a strip of something to the panel down the left side, but as I started to put my card together I realised I didn't want to introduce any additional pattern and decided instead to create offset frames and allow the Night of Navy to take a more prominent role.

Bird of Happiness - I love this little bird from the 'Choose Happiness' stamp set and have wanted to use him to create a pattern for some time. Since he is about to retire, I thought it was about time I got onto it! My panel was the perfect size for a tic-tac-toe of birdies in all three colours (Night of Navy is the winner here too!)

A Touch of Lace - I decided to stamp my sentiment in navy onto Calypso Coral to give more emphasis to the two strongest colours of the trio and matted it with a thin border of Night of Navy too. I decided to add just a little sliver of Venetian crochet trim to the edge of my sentiment for a little embellishment.

Here is the visual summary of the key products used on today's project for you to pin for easy reference:

You can see all of my 'How To' summaries on my 'How To - Tips and Techniques' Pinterest board in case you've missed any.

I'll be back tomorrow with my card for this week's new challenge over at The Paper Players. Until then, happy stampin'!

Kind Koala Says Goodbye!

by Joanne James28. April 2016 08:05

Today it's time for a new challenge over at Create With Connie and Mary and this week we have a colour combination for you:

I decided that the Smoky Slate of today's colour combo was perfect for a card using one of my favourite single stamps in the annual catalogue, Kind Koala, that is retiring at the end of May:

Here's the low-down on today's card:

Kind Koala - This cute koala image is a great single stamp - image and sentiment all in one, with a flower that can be dressed up in so many ways. I coloured my koala in Smoky Slate and shaded in some Night of Navy on the word 'you'. For the flower, I stamped it again on Calypso Coral cardstock, fussy cut it out and paper-pieced it onto my card, adding a tiny Very Vanilla punched flower from my scraps box and finished with a navy candy dot.

A Border of Stripes - Do you recognise my patterned paper? It's one from my favourite Pretty Petal Designer Series Paper Stack. The Calypso Coral stripes were the perfect compliment to my Calypso Coral card base and koala image, which I stamped on Very Vanilla to tie in with the Very Vanilla stripes of the paper.

There's Always Room For A Bow - The clean and simple design and layout of today's card allows for a rather over-the-top double bow and button combo, to highlight more of the challenge colours. The Night of navy seam binding ribbon ties a beautiful bow - this card will definitely need a box rather than an envelope to keep it looking pristine though!

Here is the visual summary of the key products used on today's project for you to pin for easy reference:

You can see all of my 'How To' summaries on my 'How To - Tips and Techniques' Pinterest board in case you've missed any.

I'll be sorry to see this sweet little stamp retire - on the upside, there will be lots of great stamps to take its place!

Enjoy your day and I'll be back tomorrow with another project; until then, happy stampin'!
