Hello Life 'Recycled' Kingfisher Card for The Paper Players

by Joanne James4. January 2015 07:00

Welcome to my Sunday posting for The Paper Players where today Anne-Marie has a fun challenge to kick start us into the new year:

I also used Narelle's sketch over at Freshly Made Sketches for the layout of today's card. So "Everything Old is New Again" - use a recycled or re-purposed item on your project. So many possibilities! Here is my card for this week's challenge - can you see what my re-purposed item is?

I used the lovely bird stamp from one of the exclusive 2015 Sale-A-Bration stamp sets called 'A Happy Thing' which is perfect for colouring with Stampin' Up! Blendabilities. I'm not sure what bird this is supposed to be, but to me it looks like a kingfisher, hence my colouring with Pumpkin Pie and Bermuda Bay (yes, I know - a new colour coming in the Spring-Summer catalogue) Blendabilities. I cut my coloured image out with one of my circle framelits and mounted it on a window frame in Island Indigo. Did you identify my re-purposed item yet? It's my 'designer series paper' - the patterned paper is actually the inside cover of the Sale-A-Bration promotional wrapper that is attached to the outside of the new 2015 Stampin' Up! Spring-Summer catalogue! Take a look at the photo below and you'll see what I mean:

The moment I saw this paper I thought it would make a useful 'DSP' and it was perfect for the large expanse of background for today's card as the subtle pattern wouldn't detract from my stamped image and the blue-green colourway was perfect to suggest a watery scene for my bird. So not only does the new Spring-Summer catalogue have a ton of great new products for you, it comes with some free 'DSP' too! I have started distributing catalogues to my customers in readiness for this week's launch; if you are reading this and you don't have a Stampin' Up! demonstrator and would like to be added to my customer mailing list, then please do get in touch.

I'm off to start de-Christmas-ing the house; before you go off in search of items that you can recycle on your projects this week, do visit the other design team members to see what interesting ideas they've had this week:

The Paper Players Design Team

I look forward to seeing your projects featuring recycled and repurposed items in the gallery this week. Back tomorrow with another project; until then, happy stampin'!

You did a beautiful job coloring this pretty stamp! I have been wondering what kind of bird it was as well. My sister thinks it could be a hummingbird but I am not convinced of that yet. LOL Lovely card and ingenious use of the new catalog!

Thanks Debbie - I really wasn't sure about the bird type; I'm sure it will look great in lots of colourways, including something bright and hummingbird-like.

Joanne I love your use of the recycled paper for the background, and also how beautifully you colored the bird. Great color combo, too!

Thanks Sandy - I had a mini-panic when I first saw the challenge, but then my mind went into overdrive and I managed to come up with a whole pile of things for re-use; love it when that happens! I do love this colour combo for the bird too.

Joanne, I love your use of color on this card! The colors are so perfectly balanced and show off your beautifully color bird to perfection! A great way to recycle pretty paper too! I will have to pay more attention in the future as I did not even notice this paper when I received my catalog...(hangs head in shame).

Thanks Shannon - I love the bold Island Indigo, it really stands out. I'm not generally big into recycling/repurposing when cardmaking and in a minor panic at the challenge topic noticed the paper out of desperation I think, more than anything! So don't feel bad!!

Such a clever use of recycled paper and such a very pretty card.  The little bird is so cute and coloured so beautifully.  I'm so looking forward to working with you on the team for the next 6 months.  And what a great job with our sketch - thanks so much for joining us at Freshly Made Sketches.

Adorable, Joanne! I love how you colored the bird...so cheery!  And we were thinking along the same lines for sure...that paper is just too pretty not to use! Welcome to the team!

Thank you Ann, so glad to be a permanent DT with you lovely ladies. I'm not sure I was as adventurous as you on this one - you really did take the recycling to a whole other level with your little bag which was quite incredible! My card is a rather 'clean and layered' attempt at repurposing - I'm looking to be further inspired from the gallery this week!

That was a clever idea, using the paper from the catty! I love this set, and your coloring of the bird is beautiful!

You are so clever, using that catalog cover to create your dsp! I have to tell you, when I got my catalog, it was a good thing it had a cover....it was bent, creased and torn!  I had to toss it!
Your little bird is as sweet as can be, too!  Sweet creation!

Oh no - that's not how new catalogues are supposed to arrive! Recycling via the bin doesn't help the card cause lol! Some great ideas this week, for sure. I'm on a challenge to use the yellow paper on the other side now!

Aren't you the clever cookie using the catalog overwrap as DSP?!  I couldn't wait to read about your card because I honestly couldn't figure out what you re-purposed!  Had me fooled!  Great coloring job and I love this combination together.  Perfect for the challenge!

Crafty Nance, I know!! I had the thought when I first saw the wrapper, then when I saw the challenge it decided me. I have another project on the go using the packaging that comes in the SU! delivery boxes, but this was taking much longer to finish so has been put on the back-burner for another time. Some very creative designs this week!
