A Thousand Thanks For A Piano Man (or Woman!)

by Joanne James25. September 2014 14:17

A quick post from me today as I am having the busiest of weeks! Today I'm sharing my entry for this week's challenge over at 'Less is More' where this week the challenge them is 'Let's face the music and dance' and the ladies are looking for cards with a music or dance theme. Now today's card is not overly original, in that I've seen many of them on Pinterest and the internet in general for a long time, but I needed a thank you card for someone who plays piano and as I've never made one of these cards before, I thought I'd create my version which just so happens to fit the bill for this week's LIM challenge. So here's my card:

Quite difficult to photograph, so bear with me! This the front, in Basic Black, with the edge cut shaped like the lid of a grand piano, and then piano keys punched from a Word Window punch in Very Vanilla and Basic Black. Behind the cutaway section you can see the sheet music that is adhered to the inside of the card, which you can see more clearly below:

The sheet music is a piece of retired 'Modern Medley' DSP (I must confess to having hoarded the sheet music pages, I love them!), with space below for the sentiment and your message.

So a fun and simple piano card, where the 'white space' today is entirely black! Check out the other LIM entries this week for plenty of music and dance inspiration - I personally am loving the ballerinas on display!

One other thing - the Stampin' Up! UK Clearance rack updated last night - lots of new bargains at up to 80%, including 12 x 12" papers, washi tape and last season's Halloween papers and kits. You can check out all the bargains at my online store by clicking here - go and grab yourself a bargain!

Lastly, on the subject of THE Piano Man, Mr Billy Joel himself, if you're a fan and have never seen him play live, I can highly recommend it; I saw him in concert for the first time last year and can honestly say it was the best concert performance I have ever attended.

Back tomorrow with another project; until then happy stampin'!

Black and White Monochromatic Springtime Hello

by Joanne James13. June 2014 22:51

Good evening everyone! Apologies for my lack of post yesterday; Rebecca was selecte to compete in an inter-school athletics competition yesterday that unexpectedly took me out of the house for most of the day and then I had a get-together with my lovely team yesterday evening, so I really wasn't at home all day. Today I have been super busy with my preparations for Rebecca's birthday weekend and along with baking and decorating a two tier cake today and finishing off the decorations, this is truly the first time I've sat down all day!

So today I have the last of the cards we made at this month's card class using the Springtime Hello stamp set:

I had a request for a black and white card using the set and this is what I came up with. This is quite different to the other cards we made (you can see the full set below) and the monochrome colour scheme and clean and simple lines of the card make it look quite sharp and modern. Just a simple piece of Modern Medley DSP matted on Basic Black, and then the flower image stamped in black, mounted and positioned at an angle to the DSP, and a central strip to draw your eye to the image, with 3 rhinestones coloured black with a Sharpie marker to add a little accent. I left my card sentiment-free as this is the sort of card you can use for any occasion.

That's all from me; I need to get some sleep before the onslaught of a group of 8 and 9 year olds tomorrow ready to craft and party in style! Back tomorrow with another card; until then, happy stampin'!

D-Day 70th Anniversary - So Much To Be Thankful For

by Joanne James6. June 2014 09:00

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Landings in World War Two, with the start of the invasion on the 6th June known as D-Day. There are commemorations taking place both at home and abroad today to remember those Allied personnel who lost their lives on this day and to recognise the bravery, commitment and sacrifices of those service personnel who fought during the war to free Europe from Nazi occupation.

So it seemed a fitting day to share with you a recent commission. I was asked to create some cards and gift boxes as thank you gifts for some teachers who had led a school trip to the World War Two battlefields recently. A red poppy, the traditional form of remembrance, is the star of this card:

I chose a simple Real Red background and created a layered border using Modern Medley DSP. I stamped the poppy from the 'Simply Sketched' hostess set in Black stazon onto Very Vanilla, then coloured using Real Red ink and my aquapainter, with a touch of Garden Green for the stem. I added the sentiment directly to the card base, and honestly didn't feel this card needed anything else. I also made a co-ordinating gift box using one of the kraft gift boxes available in the annual catalogue:

I covered in co-ordinating paper and made a tag with the same sentiment and poppy image on Very Vanilla and punched with my Scalloped Tag Topper punch, finishing with a 3/4" Chevron ribbon bow.

A lovely set to show appreciation and appropriate to share it on a day when we should all take time to remember the courage, bravery and sacrifice of our armed forces, of yesterday and today, who give of themselves in order that we may live relatively safe and secure lives. I for one, am thankful for that.

Back tomorrow with another project; until then, hapy stampin'!

Simply Sketched Sympathy Card

by Joanne James23. May 2014 10:00

Yay it's Friday - it may be stormy here in the UK, but it can't dampen that Friday feeling! Especially as this weekend we have a Bank Holiday too - an extra day makes all the difference. Today's card uses the sketch layout over at Retrosketches this week:

I recently had the need the need to send two sympathy cards within a week and realised that it isn't something I keep a stock of, even though it's the type of card you often need without warning. I decided to make one using this week's sketch - here's my card:

I decided to use Real Red ink and a blender pen to colour my Simply Sketched poppy, which is stamped in black Stazon on Very Vanilla. Whilst red is often associated with love and romance, the Flanders poppies were also red and they are a traditional symbol of remembrance. I matted my poppy with a layer of Basic Black, then did the same with the circle element behind, cutting the top layer from a piece of Modern Medley designer paper using my Big Shot and Circles Framelits. To finish, I coloured some rhinestones black with a Sharpie marker pen and adhered them to the card.

A nice early post from me today; no sports fixtures this afternoon, so time for a trip to the hairdressers instead - I hope the weather is kind!

Back tomorrow with another card; until then, happy stampin'!

Modern Medley Team Welcome

by Joanne James15. November 2013 21:03

No blog post yesterday as I spent the day preparing swaps for convention next week and went out last night for a pre-Christmas get-together with some of the ladies from my monthly card classes. We had a great time - they really are such fun! Today I'm sharing with you the card and notebook that I made to welcome Kim, the most recent member of my team. I decided to use the Modern Medley designer series paper as the basis for my set, which is something of a departure for me as I don't usually work in just black and white (or in this case, vanilla). So here's my set:

I used a couple of the stamps in the Chalk Talk set as the focal point and kept the design simple with just some ribbon and button accents. here's a close up of the book cover:

And here's the co-ordinating card, with seam binding ribbon and bow, rather than naturals ribbon:

I really like this set, even with the absence of colour - nice for a change! More importantly, Kim liked it too, which is really the main thing. Welcome gifts are just one of the many benefits of joining my team; if you are reading this and would like to know more about how to become a Stampin' Up! demonstrator and all the benefits that becoming a member of my team has to offer, then email me at joanne@thecraftyowl.co.uk or contact me on 07773 421446 for an informal chat today.

Back tomorrow with a great project and easy to follow video tutorial; until then, happy stampin'!
