Happy New Year Card with a Little Sparkle!

by Joanne James30. December 2014 21:15

I've had a great work day today and managed to fit in some quality crafting time, so amongst other things I have a Happy new Year card to share with you today that was inspired by this week's sketch over at The Paper Craft Crew:

Here is the card I created:

For a new year celebratory card some glitz and glamour were definitely the order of the day, so I layered a number of gold and sliver elements - glimmer paper, silver foil, sequins and gold vellum and topped with a silver embossed black pennant cut with my Banner framelits. The stamp I used is from the versatile 'Mingle All The Way' set from the Autumn-Winter Seasonal Catalogue; this set along with many others, is only available until January 5th when the catalogue ends, so if it's still on your wish list then don't leave it to late to order. I created a popped-up banner for the word 'cheers' having heat embossed this section in black on brushed gold cardstock, then cut it out and adhered with dimensionals. Some gold ribbon, a trio of rhinestones coloured with a black permanent marker and done!

We are having our traditional James family day on New Year's Day so I will be taking this card along with me for my mother-in-law; I'm hoping it will go some way to make up for the lack of Christmas card!

I'm also linking up to the new year challenge over at Hand Stamped Sentiments where this is the challenge inspiration photo:

Back tomorrow with a special 'extra' post for the lovely ladies over at Colour Me...! and a new set of weekly deals. Until then, happy stampin'!

Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle All The Way!

by Joanne James22. November 2014 07:00

It's the weekend - yay! Today I'm sharing my card for this week's challenge over at the Merry Monday Card Challenge, where Sue has the following challenge for us this week:

Hmmm - bells! These designers are really keeping me on my toes this week, as this is another one of those where investigation of my extensive supplies led me to conclude not a single bell image, die cut or embellishment of any kind! Not to be beaten, I decided it was time to think laterally; the obvious choice was to run to my e-cutter, but instead I thought I would try and create some jingle bells using punches. Here is my finished card:

I had the urge to create something really glitzy today, so chose a plain background of Garden Green and decided on gold glimmer paper for my bells. They were surprisingly easy to make: I punched a 1" circle, then punched a star out of the top half. I punched two small circles with my crop-a-dile on the bottom half and used my paper snips to create the openings. Lastly, I punched a round edge using my 1 3/4" circle punch, adhered it to the centre of my bell and trimmed the ends. I also created a couple of gold bell hooks, but you can't really see these beneath the ribbon. I layered these onto my card base, popping one on a dimensional for a little lift, then finished with a rather extravagant bow. This red satin ribbon curls so beautifully I couldn't resist - even though this card is SOOO impractical for mailing!

My sentiment is a combination of the die cut using my Little Letters thinlits to spell 'jingle' and backed with Real Red cardstock, and the 'all the way' from the Mingle All The Way stamp set, which I selectively coloured with my Garden Green marker.

I'm also entering this card for the challenge over at Less is More where the theme this week is aptly 'Jingle All The Way', although I have another card planned with a slightly different slant for later in the week and it didn't occur to me that this one probably fits the theme slightly better!

I'm really pleased with my shiny jingle bells - what do you think? I'm off for my usual Saturday of sport today; back tomorrow with my Design Team card for this week's new challenge over at The Paper Players. Until then, happy stampin'!

There's No Happy Like Holiday Happy Christmas Card

by Joanne James8. November 2014 21:14

Today has been a busy day full of highs and lows: a poorly boy at home and a central heating boiler that has packed up and won't be fixed until early next week, but also a pleasant Ladies Afternoon at a local salon and a fun-filled evening at our annual Bonfire and Fireworks Display at school. All in all a busy one and a late blog, so I'd best get on with today's card! Today's creation uses this week's sketch over at Mojo Monday combined with the colour challenge over at Create With Connie and Mary:

I really liked this sketch and thought the colour combination was an interesting one, as I wouldn't normally choose to combine blue with red on a Christmas card, so I wanted to have a play and see if I could make it work. Here is my card:

I used Cherry Cobbler for my base and added a strip of Lost Lagoon followed by a piece of Whisper White trimmed on one side with the Scallop Border Punch and overlaid with a piece of white and Cherry Cobbler patterned paper from the Trim the Tree DSP paper stack. To create the pennant banner, I stamped the 'Holiday Happy' stamp from the Mingle All The Way stamp set and coloured it with my Lost Lagoon marker and Cherry Cobbler and Smoky Slate Blendabilities. I added a strip of All is Calm washi tape the the top of the pennant and added a few rhinestones coloured with my Stampin' Up! Cherry Cobbler Blendabilities markers and stamped the 'Happy' banner a second time on a scrap of Whisper white cardstock, which I then cut out with my paper snips and popped on a couple of dimensionals for a little extra interest. To finish, I added a piece of Lost Lagoon Silky Taffeta Ribbon tied in a bow.

I rather like the finished look of today's card and this colour combo is certainly one I would consider using again.

Back tomorrow with my design card for this week's new challenge over at The Paper Players.

Until then, happy stampin'!

Mingle All the Way Monochromatic Snowflake Card

by Joanne James7. October 2014 08:00

Today I'm back with a Christmas card (haven't had one of those for a few days!!) I saw this week's sketch over at Create With Connie and Mary this week and immediately had an idea - always great when that happens! Here is the sketch that inspired my card:

This is a great sketch with many possibilities; I wanted to use the 'Mingle All The Way' stamp from the stamp set of the same name and this is the card I came up with:

I used Soft Sky for my card base and a piece of the swirly snowflake paper from the 'All is Calm' speciality DSP pack for my offset layer. I then used a plain piece of Soft Sky for my bottom banner flag and overlaid this with a vellum banner that I stamped in Versamark with snowflakes from the Endless Wishes stamp set and then heat embossed in White. For the circle, I stamped the sentiment again in Versamark and heat embossed in white, then punched it out using my 2 1/2" circle punch. To finish, I added a few snowflake sequins and a bow in white seam binding ribbon.

Without trying, I made a monochromatic card, something I usually find quite tricky. I love the calm, serene feeling of this card.

Back tomorrow with this week's Design Team card for Colour Me...! and a new set of Wednesday Weekly Deals. Until then, happy stampin'!

My First Halloween Pumpkin!

by Joanne James5. October 2014 07:00

It's Sunday and time for this week's challenge over at The Paper Players, where Jaydee has a fun Halloween theme challenge for us this week:

I used the layout over at Freshly Made Sketches again this week for my card (although I'm not sure my card is as 'clean' as is required; the layout was too good to pass up) as I thought it would be perfect to highlight my first Halloween pumpkin - here's my card:

I used a piece of Motley Monsters DSP on a base of Tangerine Tango for the front of my card; I love this paper and the little eyes that peek through between the trees, although I must confess this looks so much better on a sheet of 12 x 12" and it was difficult to take my scissors to it! I used the Halloween sentiment from 'Mingle All The Way', colouring the letters with a Tangerine Tango Stampin' Write marker and mounted this on a circle of Basic Black. This circle was mounted on top of a piece of chevron-embossed Crushed Curry and black chevron ribbon and the card finished with a cute little pumpkin from the Fall Fest stamp set and cut out with the matching framelit. It's tricky to see from the photo, but the pumpkin was then covered in Crystal Effects and allowed to dry, so it has a lovely dimension and shine.

That's my simple Halloween card for today; why not pop over to The Paper Players challenge blog and check out this week's inspiration from the other designers? As always, there are some great cards on show.

Back tomorrow with another project; until then, happy stampin'!

Have a Spooky Halloweeny with The Paper Players

by Joanne James24. August 2014 08:00

Today I'm sharing my Design team card for this week's challenge over at The Paper Players. This week Jaydee is hosting and she has the following sketch layout for us:

I love a good sketch layout and this one is no exception - I'd designed 3 cards with it within minutes of looking at it, so don't be surprised if you see this layout inspiring more of my creations in the coming weeks. For today though, I have another seasonal catalogue 'sneak peek' for you (I know, I'm such a tease!) - this time, with a Halloween theme:

I don't normally purchase any Halloween items as I usually plough straight into Christmas, but this year I couldn't resist - there are some fantastic items to choose from! Today's card features the 'Motley Monsters' DSP and stamps from both the 'Freaky Friends' stamp set (the cat) and the 'Mingle All the Way' stamp set (sentiment). I heat embossed the cat in black so that he would be nice and shiny and coloured in the open letters of the sentiment with marker colours that co-ordinated with the DSP. The banner flag is made from a piece of Tangerine Tango cardstock covered with Retro Fresh washi tape in the same colour.

I hope this gets you in the mood for a spooky spooky halloweeny! Do pop over to The Paper Players to see what the other designers have come up with - there are some amazing takes on today's sketch.

Back tomorrow with a post for Bank Holiday Monday; until then, happy stampin'!
