Large Letters and Numbers Brother Football Birthday Card #GDP103

by Joanne James7. September 2017 20:30

Good evening lovely readers! I was tempted to share a Christmas card today but as it's my birthday I thought a birthday card was in order. Not one to me though - instead one that I made for Ben from Rebecca for his birthday recently - another masculine card to fit with the theme over at the Global Design Project this week which also happens to use this week's Color Throwdown colour palette too:

I decided to make another slightly larger card than usual as I wanted to be able to personalise it - take a look:

Here's the lowdown on today's card:

Recipe For Success - Every time I make a card with someone in particular in mind, I try to choose something personal or meaningful to that individual; after all, that has to be the biggest benefit of crafting your own. That is no more so than when it's a card for your nearest and dearest, and Rebecca was clear this card needed some key things: the number 10, the word 'brother', some form of birthday greeting and both a football and the colour red - the colour of Ben's beloved Manchester United football team. Armed with such clear requirements, it made the job of designing this card super easy.

Numbers and Letters - I used both my large letters and numbers today. My letters were stamped using 'Letters For You' again like yesterday's card and cut out with the Large Letters Framelits. I used my numbers to create a tone-on-tone repeating background pattern of the number 10; a good way to include it without having it front and centre. I also used the banner die from the Large Numbers Framelits for my happy birthday banner.

Retro Rubber - I substituted the 'O' in 'BROTHER' with a football, courtesy of a little 'retro rubber' from the long-retired stamp set, 'Great Sport'. I'm so glad I held on to this set - I have used the football and basketball in this set sooo many times!! A true blast from the past - so one for a link up with SUO Challenges too this week as this is their theme, how appropriate!

Here is the visual summary of the key products used on today's project for you to pin for easy reference:

You can see all of my 'How To' summaries on my 'How To - Tips and Techniques' Pinterest board in case you've missed any.

What kinds of stamps have you held on to and would never part with? Do leave me a comment below - Id love to know!

I hope you enjoyed today's post; I'll be back tomorrow with another project - definitely for Christmas and with a little more retro rubber thrown in! Until then, happy stampin'!

Birthday Netballs!

by Joanne James29. October 2013 23:12

Today's blog post is a late one as I've been out this evening and had a reasonably hectic day and didn't get a chance to do it beforehand. I used sketch #64 over at Paper Craft Crew Challenges as the basis for this card and I'm just in time to sneak in a link up, so thought I'd better get typing! I had a commission card request for a female birthday card that featured netball. Whilst I knew the basketball stamp in 'Great Sport' would make the perfect netball, I was wondering how I was going to pull it all together. I decided to use the PPCC sketch this week as the basis for my design layout. Here's the sketch inspiration:

So, sunglasses at the ready - here is my interpretation:

The card is very orange, but having played around with various other colour combinations this really did seem to work best (and luckily, the recipient loves the colour orange!) Any of the colours I would ordinarily have paired with Tangerine Tango made the card look too masculine and really didn't work. I did use some Real Red as an accent colour and a little Basic Grey. Wondering how I created the netball hoop and net? I simply used my large oval punch to cut some thin strips of cardstock and adhered them to each other in a weave pattern.

And the moral of the story? Orange is for all cards, not just Halloween ones! Pop over to the Paper Craft Crew Challenge page and see how the designers and other participants have interpreted this week's sketch.

Back tomorrow with news of more great offers from Stampin' Up; until then, happy stampin'!

Football Mad Boy's Birthday Card

by Joanne James13. October 2013 20:57

Well, the weather here has been dreadful here but yesterday our monster home-grown pumpkin was harvested during one of the day's few dry spells (photos to follow!) and today we went to the theatre to watch 'Dinosaur Zoo', so all in all not a bad weekend. Today I've a change from Christmas cards for you: I thought I would share a birthday card commission I made for someone whose birthday it is today. Another football-mad Chelsea fan, so here's what I came up with:

I used my 'Great Sport' football stamp to decorate a background base panel, then created a central panel with some great football paraphanelia: a trophy, a shirt with the recipient's player number (not age, as one of my eagle-eyed offspring was quick to point out!) and a football and finished the panel with some co-ordinating bunting, Chelsea blue, of course.

If you're a stamper and wondering where I got the trophy stamp from, it's from one of the stamps in the 'Tag It' set. I've just covered the wording with a DSP 'ribbon' so that it fits with my football theme.

Hope you like the card; tomorrow I'll be sharing another birthday card; until then, happy stampin'!

Great Sport - Football

by Joanne James30. August 2013 18:30

Today I'm sharing a card I made recently for a football-mad friend. The 'Great Sport' stamp set was an obvious choice for this card - here it is:

There's lots of layering on this card, both in the background and the central design: I stamped the images a few times, then fussy cut the wings and punched and layered the football and fussy cut and layered the stars along the top. The card was inspired by Brian King who often uses layering to great effect. In this instance, it gave me the opportunity to use some 'Chelsea blue' to echo the fan team colours of the recipient and avoid the card being too 'black and white'. Some stamping inside the card and on the envelope added the finishing touches.

I'm sure I'll use this card design again - it would work for any footie-mad fan.

Back tomorrow with another card and lots of news; until then, happy stampin'!

Brother Birthday Basketball Card

by Joanne James12. August 2013 21:35

As promised, today I'm back with the other of Ben's birthday cards, this time from his big sister. Ben's biggest birthday surprise was his very own basketball hoop. He has been mad keen on ball bouncing for a while and he was thrilled to receive a basketball from one of his little school friends at his party. he wasn't at all expecting a hoop and his little face positively lit up when he opened up the box. So I used the new much loved basketball for the inspiration for his card:

A simple design of a jumble of bright orange basketballs, with a special one popped up on a couple of dimensionals to replace the 'O' in 'Brother'. I must confess this card was somewhat bourn out of being rather short on time too, but once I had the idea it didn't take long to execute at all (which was definitely a good thing!) That said, I'm really pleased with how it turned out.

Back tomorrow with another card; until then, happy stampin'!
