by Joanne James27. January 2016 21:00Another quick silhouette card from my brayer class today - this one featuring the birds in a tree stamp from the Serene Silhouettes stamp set:
This card uses a similar pieced silhouette technique that I used on yesterday's card, with the sunset sky panel made from a combination of Pumpkin Pie, Tangerine Tango and Real Red inks. I used the sentiment from the 'Wetlands' stamp set again and this time in addition to my black mat and Pumpkin Pie card base, I added a piece of black satin ribbon tied around the bottom of the panel.
A quick post from me today; do come back tomorrow to see what I created for this week's new challenge over at Create With Connie and Mary - I have something rather special to share!
Until then, happy stampin'!

by Joanne James26. January 2016 20:32I've spent a lovely day today teaching a group of ladies how to brayer in a Brayer Technique Masterclass and witnessed lots of lovely sunsets and beautiful colour schemes as they learned the 'do's and don'ts' of perfecting the technique. Today's card is one of the ones we made, practising creating a monochromatic ombre:
We used a small 3/4" circle of post-it note to mask out a moon, then having brayered in the blue sky, I stamped the tree image partially off the panel in Black Archival ink and mounted this onto a mat of Basic Black. I then stamped the tree again on the Tempting Turquoise card base, using my stamp-a-ma-jig to line up with the partial stamped image. I added my sentiment from the 'Wetlands' stamp set to complete my card.
I'm linking my card up again with the lovely ladies over at Less Is More whose challenge this week is to use a silhouette on your card. I like the way the partial stamping adds interest to the silhouette on this otherwise monochromatic card and this card was a great way to start today's class. Here's a shot of my ladies hard at work and having fun:
Very messy, but well worth it!
If you would like to join one of my classes, please do get in touch for details of upcoming classes or check out the listings on my web page here.
I'll be back tomorrow with another project; until then, happy stampin'!

by Joanne James18. June 2015 08:00It's Thursday and time for this week's new challenge over at Create With Connie and Mary. This week we have a colour challenge for you:
I found this quite a difficult colour combo to work with (I think it was the brown and grey together that did it for me), although the brown and grey duo did remind me of Canadian geese, so in the end I went with a rather safe masculine card using my Wetlands set:
I combined this trusted favourite, which I stamped in Chocolate Chip on watercolour paper and coloured in all three inks using my Aquapainter, with some of the new Chocolate Chip Neutrals DSP Stack with the polka dot pattern. My Island Indigo circle is also embossed with the Large Polka Dots embossing folder, although it is difficult to see in the photo. A little background Gorgeous Grunge, some threads of jute ribbon and a candy dot finish my card.
Do pop over and see what the other designers have come up with - there are some great examples of how this trio can be combined on your cards! Don't forget to check out the challenge rules too before entering :-)
I'll be back tomorrow with a bright and colourful birthday card; until then, happy stampin'!

by Joanne James3. February 2015 09:34Well, it's Tuesday and we woke to a light dusting of snow outside this morning. Not enough for a 'snow day', much to the children's disappointment and mercifully, unlike last week's flurry, the roads are all gritted so once we were clear of our side street the traffic was flowing freely. It might be winter outside, but today's card is reminiscent of warmer times as I have my card for this week's challenge over at Create With Connie and Mary. This week there is an interesting colour palette to work with, which in itself has a distinct wintery feel:
Before I get on to my card today, I would just like to give a little shout out to both Connie and Mary and the rest of the CCMC design team; they really are a super bunch of ladies and hugely inspiring. I love their weekly challenges and play along whenever I can. I have been lucky enough to be chosen as one of their Top 3 Picks from time to time, which is always nice, however I love the colour combos and sketches these ladies come up with and it's great to play along for fun. I didn't manage last week - I had my card all designed, just didn't get enough time at my stamp desk to put it together! - but yesterday I managed to get a few cards made, including my card for this week's challenge so I'm back 'with the program'! I'm also using the sketch from Lesley Croghan's new challenge over at Always Playing With Paper - another great challenge to play along with! Without further ado, here is this week's card:
I 'stretched' the sketch as I wanted a landscape orientation for my card, as I decided to feature those little waders from the 'Wetlands' stamp set - definitely my favourite in this set, although they are all lovely to be fair. To 'colour' my image, I used a technique I've seen lots on Pinterest and took the large swoosh from the 'Work of Art' stamp set and stamped it once in Sahara Sand, having stamped off once first, and once in Lost Lagoon, having stamped off twice first, to add just a subtle colouring behind the birds. I switched my sentiment for one from the 'Teeny Tiny Sentiments' stamp set as this card is destined for the Head Groundsman at my children's school, who is retiring at the end of next week, following many years of loyal service. I mounted my image on a piece of Basic Grey and kept my Lost Lagoon flag and Sahara Sand base plain, adding a piece of patterned Basic Grey DSP from the 'Moonlight' DSP stack for background interest. I finished with a little grey metal button, double tied with linen thread, and my card was finished.
I hope you like today's card - I'm off to tackle a mountainous pile of ironing and get a few other chores completed before rewarding myself with a catch up over a cup of tea with a friend I haven't seen in a while this afternoon. Back tomorrow with another project; until then, happy stampin'!

Today is a very exciting day - my first official post as a Guest Designer with The Paper Players! I am very pleased to be joining this talented group of ladies for the next three months, along with the other amazing guest designers: Claire Broadwater, Yapha Mason, Andrea Whisman and Mike Funke - I'm really looking forward to working with you all. So today's challenge is from Nance and requires projects with a beach theme:
When I think 'beach' I immediately am drawn to the bold and bright colours of the Caribbean, where, as a keen scuba diver I've spent some of my best beach holidays. However, for today's card I decided to opt for something that shows a more traditional British beach scene and took the opportunity to use one of the new in-colours, Lost Lagoon. I also used this week's Freshly Make Sketches layout (turned through 90 degrees) for my card - take a look:
I took out the seagulls from my recently acquired 'Wetlands' set and with a Sahara Sand card base, stamped them in Basic Grey on a circle of Whisper White cut out with my Big Shot and circles framelits and sponged in the background using Soft Sky, Lost Lagoon, Sahara Sand and a little So Saffron masking the sun using a little punched circle of spare cardstock. I mounted this circle slightly offset onto a larger circle cut from Lost Lagoon and used a piece off paper from the new Moonlight Designer Series paper stack as a partial background - this paper so reminds me of waves! The pattern actually runs across the short side of the stack, so to make it extend along the whole of the long side of my card I simply matched the pattern and created a join, that is hidden behind the circular focal point - clever, eh? I then finished with a strip of Basic Grey cardstock wrapped with a piece of Lost Lagoon stitched satin ribbon, my sentiment stamped on a narrow flag and a basic metal button tied with linen thread to add to the natural feel.
I love the circular elements on this card and the muted colour scheme - it takes me back to my childhood when I lived quite near to some of the best of the British coastline and would often spend warm sunny days building sandcastles and paddling in the sea. I currently live right in the centre of 'middle England' and couldn't be further from any stretch of coastline than anywhere else in the country; I'll have to make do with watching the barges and moorhens on the local canals instead!
I hope you like my card today and that it inspires you to hop on over to the Paper Players challenge blog to join in and upload your challenge creations. The Paper Player challenge takes place weekly, opening on a Sunday at 8am (PST) and closes at noon on Friday (PST). Here's a quick recap of our challenge rules:
1. Create a new paper project
2. Upload your creation to your blog with a link back to us and provide a direct link to the post featuring your challenge submission.
3. Please link your card to no more than three challenges, TOTAL.
4. Have FUN!
We look forward to seeing your seaside-themed creations! We are having a restful family day today, having had a busy day yesterday with a theatre visit and swimming gala and the next two weeks choc full of things going on as the end of the school term draws near. Back tomorrow with another project; until then, happy stampin'!
