Watercolour World Adventure Awaits AYSI300

by Joanne James2. June 2023 12:00

Today I'm sharing my design team card for our new challenge over at As you See It where we have a special challenge for you - we are celebrating our 300th challenge! It's theme week and our wonderful leader Heather C has chosen the theme of 'adventure' for our milestone challenge:

I was inspired by the patriotic red, white and blue colours of the Card Concept and the sketch over at Try Stamping on Tuesday to create my clean and layered card - take a look:

Here's the low-down on today's card:

Today's card uses a combination of 'something old (retired), something carried over and something new': my something new is those Nested Essentials Dies again, where I used one to create the aperture in my vellum layer to 'frame' my map, courtesy of the background stamp 'Watercolour World'. I  bordered it with a thin strip of red and white stripes and finding nothing in my current stash that has an adventure theme or wording, I finished my card with a sentiment made from a retired Sweet Silhouettes die and the 'Let's Set Sail' stamp set:

I really like the effect of the vellum frame - a great way to focus on the map, without the frame obscuring the detail. A great tip when you use vellum in a frame in this way is to cut your piece wider than you need and wrap it around the layers below and adhere firmly on the reverse. This way your vellum layer stays in place, without there being any unsightly visible glue on the front of your card.

A simple layered card that I will keep ready for when one of the many teenagers I know announces they are heading to foreign parts for a gap year adventure.

What does the theme of adventure mean to you? Why not make a project and share it with us for our current challenge. Since we are celebrating, there will be 6 winners this week, one chosen by each member of the Design Team and each will be eligible to receive a prize from Stampin' Up! or Clarity.

Here's a summary of our challenge rules:

  • Create any card, scrapbooking page, 3D project or packaging project that fits the challenge.
  • Please include the challenge graphic and link back to the challenge in your blog post. Turn off word verification so we can leave you lots of lovely comments. Make sure you link the post not the whole blog to the Linky. Use #AYSIXXX when uploading to a public gallery.
  • If you’re unsure about ‘the rules’, check the details under the Challenge Guidelines tab on the As You See It Challenge homepage.
We look forward to seeing your creations in the AYSI gallery.

Enjoy your day and I'll be back tomorrow with another project. Until then, happy stampin'!

Let's Set Sail CAS Birthday Card Pair PP605

by Joanne James21. August 2022 08:00

Today it's Sunday and time for this week's new challenge over at The Paper Players! It's the turn of the fabulous Laurie to host this week and she has a Clean and Simple challenge for us to work with:

I decided to whip up a quick card using the Let's Set Sail bundle for my project today - take a look:

Here's the low-down on today's card:

I went super simple and having masked a circle aperture, used the long 'seascape' stamp to create an ombre effect, by repeat stamping in various shades of blue. I inked the reflection stamp in the same way, then  added some birds and a sentiment, and a sailboat courtesy of the Sailboat Builder Punch with bright red sails popped up on dimensionals to finish:

I liked this card so much i created another one in shades of aqua green, this time using a sailboat that was completely white:

This is a great set for a clean and simple nautical card - the pattern detail in the stamps adds interest and 'texture' without adding anything else:

I also added a stamped sailboat with ombre detail to the envelope for added detail. So which of these cards do you prefer? Here's a shot of both side by side to compare:

I think I'm still partial to the first one - I love the pop of red from the sails! - but the all-white of the second one definitely makes for a super clean and simple card. I'd love to know what you think - do leave me a comment below and share your thoughts.

Tree Lot Dies Summer Caravan Adventures PP599

by Joanne James10. July 2022 08:00

Today it's Sunday and time for this week's new challenge over at The Paper Players! It's the turn of the fabulous LeAnne to host this week and she has a bright and fresh colour challenge for us to work with:

I haven't had much time to play beyond my design commitments lately, but can never resist a good sketch so I decided to combine this week's trio of colours with the fabulous sketch over at Just Add Ink this week (hello ladies!). I resisted the urge to go floral and inspired by the glorious weather we are having in the UK at the moment cast my mind back to memories of childhood holidays and created a summery card with some new (free!) dies - take a look:

Here's the low-down on today's card:

Tree Lot Dies - Both the caravan and the trees on today's card were cut using the Tree Lot Dies - one of a number of products that can be yours FREE during the current Sale-A-Bration promotion. Designed to co-ordinate with the 'Trees For Sale' stamp set in the new July-December mini catalogue, a number of the dies work well on their own too - and not just for Christmas cards either. The Tree Lot Dies can be yours free with an order of £90 or more - why not buy the co-ordinating stamp set as a starting point?

Get Creative With Colour - LeAnne's colour palette this week is an interesting one; the inclusion of white alongside two colours might at first glance seem limiting, but the are lots of ways to get creative with these colours and create interest. I used a piece of Tahitian Tide in-colour designer paper as my base - this gives both pattern and shades of colour. I also used some in-colour ombre glimmer paper for the flags on my caravan and used a neat trick to create two shades of Parakeet Party for my trees: I cut both layers of my tree from parakeet Party cardstock, then coloured each base tree all over with my dark Parakeet Party Stampin' Blends marker. This gave this piece a darker finish and allowed contrast with the detailed top layer.

Texture Tricks - In addition to variation in colour, I used texture to add interest to my card design: the caravan die has lots of embossed detailing, I layered my trees, I added some subtle blended background colour to my banner before I built my scene (I used a retired Stitched Nested Label Die for the banner itself), added some stitched diecut clouds courtesy of the Give It A Whirl Dies, the glimmer paper pennant banner, a baker's twine bow and lastly a heat-embossed sentiment, from the 'Let's Set Sail' stamp set - you can see these details more closely below:

I actually wanted a sentiment from the retired 'Glamper Greetings' set that said 'Home is where you park it' but I couldn't find my stamp set anywhere in the chaos that is my craft room - it is long overdue a thorough clean-out! 'Adventure Awaits' didn't quite suite the sketch as well, but was still an appropriate sentiment for my card, which is headed to a previous team member of mine who in a few month's time is about to embrace retirement and depart on a belated gap-year in her motor home - I'm sure many adventures await her on her travels.

So what do you think? I love this fresh colour combination - do leave me a comment below with your thoughts, I'd love you to share your views.

Enjoy your day; I am still playing catch up, but will definitely be taking some time out this afternoon to watch the men's singles final at Wimbledon; it should be a great match and I've definitely earned it - I might even treat myself to a Pimms too; well, it would be rude not to!! I'll be back soon with another project. Until then, happy stampin'!

Let's Set Sail Adventure Awaits CCS469

by Joanne James10. May 2022 13:00

It's Tuesday and time for a new challenge over at CAS Colours & Sketches. This week's challenge is a sketch challenge and Shannon has asked that we layer some shapes along a vertical panel. Feel free to flip or rotate the sketch when making your card.

For my card today I did just that - I turned the sketch through 90 degrees and went with a very fluid interpretation of Shannon's sketch using the Let's Set Sail bundle:

Here's the low-down on today's card:

Let's Set Sail - The Let's Set Sail bundle is perfect for clean and simple cards and it works for everything from (masculine) birthdays and encouragement to baby cards. I added the sea directly to my white cardbase, along with my sentiment and some birds, then added my punched sailboat with dimensionals for a little extra lift. I love the sketchy appearance of the stamps in this set:

Tuesday Tip - The Tuesday Tip that I'm sharing over in my Crafty Owl Creatives Facebook Group today is around the Sailboat Builder Punch - some clever stamping enables you to stamp and punch it out in one go:

This is such a time-saver and econimcal use of cardstock too. You can get the detail, see other Tuesday Tips and more by joining my Facebook Group here

Today's card was also inspired by a couple of other challenges: the team over at Color Hues are asking us to create cards using the colours blue and tan and over at Time Out where the theme is 'vacation':

As a keen scuba diver, I am more like to be found beneath the waves rather than in a sailboat, but each to their own (and I don't have a stamp featuring a scuba diver ;-) )

Enjoy your day and I'll be back tomorrow with another project. Until then, happy stampin'!
