by Joanne James16. June 2015 15:28As promised, I'm back today to share with you the birthday card I made for Rebecca to celebrate her tenth birthday yesterday. I used this week's sketch layout at TGIF Challenges as my inspiration:
Whilst most of her birthday cards had a distinctly 'pink' theme, Rebecca loves bright colours and patterns and I wanted to create something based around the colours of the new Cherry On Top DSP stack and the co-ordinating washi tape - here's what I came up with:
Bright, right?! I used Watermelon Wonder as my base and Bermuda Bay for my mat layers, then created a panel of stripes using each of the Cherry On Top washi tapes. On my central panel, I stamped the sentiment and cake stand directly onto the base, then created a 3D cake by stamping each of the 'Build A Birthday' cake layers onto a separate piece of Whisper White and curving with my bone folder before adhering to my card. I topped my cake with a trio of washi tape flags and added a Cucumber Crush blossom accent, complete with rhinestone, to finish. Check out my cute little flags below - so easy to make by wrapping a piece of washi tape around the end of a cocktail stick and snipping to create flag shapes:
I used the positioning of the stars on the sketch to hold a handcrafted birthday badge that could be removed - when your birthday is on a school day, a badge is most definitely a part of birthday uniform! I simply stamped a 1 3/4" circle with age, sentiment and a birthday balloon and popped it into a badge kit - here's a close up:
The verdict? Rebecca loved it, so mission accomplished! She had a lovely day at school and the we all went out for dinner with grandparents before coming home to open yet more presents. Oh to be ten again!
Back tomorrow with this week's Wednesday Deals and another card for the TGIF Challenge, only this time the Monthly Throwdown. Until then, happy stampin'!

by Joanne James23. May 2015 17:47I've had a lovely crafty morning earlier but am later with my blog post as I've been at a basket ball tournament this afternoon with the youngest James Junior (his school club team were tournament winners - woohoo!) and then since we have a rare swim-free Saturday, the children are sleeping over at Grannies and the DH and I treated ourselves to dinner and a movie - Pitch Perfect 2 (aka-awesome - every bit as good as the first one!) All in all a great day, but since what you're really here for is my card let's get to it! Today I used this week's Freshly Made Sketches sketch as my inspiration:
I needed a birthday card for a 10 year old girlfriend of Rebecca's and decided that this sketch would be perfect for what I had in mind - here's my card:
I started out with my Simply Created Hooray It's Your Day Card Kit and co-ordinating stamp set, and whilst I used the stamp set and embellishment and took my ideas from the kit, I really wanted something altogether more pink so chose a combination of Strawberry Slush and Pink Pirouette for my card and sponged onto a piece of Sale-A-Bration Irresistibly Yours Designer Series Paper for my background. I did interpret the sketch somewhat loosely, but you can see the main elements: the glimmer strip in the background, the speech bubbles (I am so going to miss these retiring framelits!) for the panel and the wooden 'hello' embellishment as my main focal point, although I did also add an Itty Bitty Accents punched flower and a glimmer butterfly to balance it out and add to the girly feel. I also added a Tip Top Taupe speech bubble to break up the pink a little - this colour goes so well with Pink Pirouette!
I hope you like today's birthday card; come back tomorrow to see what fun we have in store for this week's new challenge over at The Paper Players - there will be more sneak peeks, so you won't want to miss it! Until then, happy stampin'!

by Joanne James26. April 2015 10:00Yay! It's Sunday and time for a new challenge over at The Paper Players. We loved your watercoloured creations last week; today the lovely Ann is hosting and she has a sketch challenge for us - and you know how I love a good sketch! This is the sketch layout:
So many possibilities for this great sketch, but I decided that today I had to go with a birthday card for 2 reasons: I have lots of birthdays coming up in the next month, so I need to get into a birthday groove, but more importantly, today the lovely Ann is also celebrating her birthday, so it seemed entirely appropriate. I have sent a card (not this one!) in the post, but I'm not sure she will have received it in time for the big day so I'm playing safe with a virtual one too! I decided to use a piece of Birthday Bash paper as the inspiration for my colour scheme, and paired this with a retiring stamp set, Well Worded:
I used Tangelo Twist for my base and a mat of Bermuda Bay, then used a split layer with Birthday Bash DSP across the top and Whisper White along the bottom. I covered the join with pennants in co-ordinating colours, then stamped my birthday cake in Tangelo Twist with Bermuda Bay candles and cut this out with my Big Shot and Oval framelits, matting it onto a slightly larger oval that I paper pierced using my piercing template. To finish, I added a final sentiment to the bottom corner using the 'birthday girl' stamp from the 'Hooray It's Your Day' set - this set co-ordinates with the project kit of the same name, but is useful for lots of cards and can be used for some fun personalisation - this card could equally be tailored to a 'birthday boy' and you wouldn't even need to change the colours. I stamped a trio of stars from the same set in co-ordinating colours to finish my fun birthday card.
So before you reach for your paper and inks, check out what our amazing team has created to inspire you this week:
