Spotlight Technique on Indescribable Gift

by Joanne James10. March 2015 21:35

Today I'm sharing another of the cards that we made at my Monthly Technique Class yesterday, featuring the Indescribable Gift stamp set. This was the simplest of the cards we made, and features the 'spotlight' technique:

The basic idea is that you stamp your chosen image, then stamp it again a second time and punch out one area of the image that you would like to highlight and this is the piece you colour. I kept the layout of my card simple and highlighted one area of the blossom stem and coloured this with my Pink Pirouette, Wild Wasabi and Crumb Cake Blendabilties. Here's a close up of my spotlighted element:

Another simple, yet effective technique that is perfect with an outlined stamp image. I love the sentiment on this card too - there's something very uplifting about it. If you live in or around Northampton and are either a keen cardmaker or someone interested in learning new techniques, my technique classes next month will be held on the 13th and 14th of April and will be featuring masking, sponging and reflection techniques using the stamp set 'Lovely As a Tree'. Full class details here - do get in touch for information and to book your place.

Before I sign off today, I wanted to share with you an important news announcement from Stampin' Up! today regarding the future of our Blendabilties product line. As some of you may be aware, there have been some quality issues with our alcohol markers. Following investigations with the manufacturer, a manufacturing problem has been identified that has resulted in damage to the fine nibs. As a company, Stampin' Up! prides itself on the quality of our products and since the incidence of failure is now outside of acceptable levels and the manufacturer is unable to guarantee a swift solution to the problem, it is with regret that the line is to be stopped with immediate effect in order to prevent further disappointment. If anyone has any issues with Blendabilities purchased from me, do get in touch so that I can arrange an exchange or refund. Meanwhile, I have some cards made and not yet blogged that use them that I will continue to share, although alas you will be unable to purchase the markers if you don't already own them. On the up side, the full range of Stampin' Write markers are unaffected and offer a wealth of colouring opportunities.

Back tomorrow with this week's Wednesday Deals and a new project.

Until then, happy stampin!

Easter Slider Card For The Paper Players

by Joanne James8. March 2015 10:00

Yay it's Sunday and time for another challenge over at The Paper Players. This week it is the turn of the lovely Anne Marie, who has a light and bright colour challenge combo for us:

Laurie's challenge last week has put me firmly in the mood for spring and these colours immediately got me thinking along similar lines. I decided I would have some fun and create an Easter card with a difference - I made a slider card using the 'For Peep's Sake' Easter stamp set. So lots of photos for you today -here's the first one of the outside:

A Crumb Cake base decorated with eggs and a cute little trio of Easter characters stamped using my Stampin' Write markers on Whisper White and fussy cut out, adhered behind some Wild Wasabi grass cut using my fringe scissors - one of this week's Weekly Deals, in case you're thinking of picking up a pair - then you pull the ribbon top to reveal the 'Eggscellent' Easter message and the little chick:

Here's a close up of the sentiment:

Followed by a close up of that cute little chick with his own message on the slide out portion above:

Isn't he so cute? This was such a fun card to make and I think looks lovely in this week's colours. So which stamp set will you reach for to create with these colours? Before you reach for your ink pads, do visit the other design team members to see what interesting ideas they've had this week:

The Paper Players Design Team

Here's a quick recap of our challenge rules:

I look forward to seeing how you interpret this colour combination in our gallery this week.

Back tomorrow with another project; until then, happy stampin'!

Indescribable Gift For a Happy Easter

by Joanne James7. March 2015 21:25

I've been busy working with my 'Indescribable Gift' stamp set as it is the stamp set that I'll be using in my technique class this month so I decided to use it to create a card for this week's Mojo Monday challenge:

I thought the circle would make a great space for the apple blossom to peek through - take a look:

I used a base of Pink Pirouette and matted it with a piece of the 'Irresistibly Yours' embossed paper - free with an order of £45 or more before the end of March - that I had sponged with Pink Pirouette ink, to add a little interest but not detract from my flower branch. I used Wild Wasabi for the panel and having stamped the blossom onto Whisper White, I coloured it with my Pink Pirouette, Wild Wasabi and Crumb Cake Blendabilities and fussy cut it out. I then positioned it through the aperture and and finally added my sentiment panel across the bottom.

This card was not quick to create - the fussy cutting took a while! - but it was well worth it. I love the finished effect.

Back tomorrow with my card for this week's new Paper Player's challenge. Until then, happy stampin'!

Happy Easter Everyone!

by Joanne James20. April 2014 20:58

Happy Easter everyone! I hope you've all had a lovely day and that the Easter bunny left you lots of yummy chocolate eggs. We've had a lovely day, with our traditional Easter egg hunt around the garden and then a family roast for lunch. Not even the rain this afternoon could dampen our spirits.  I made this really quick card this morning as an absolute last-minute Easter card - I needed one more opportunity to use an Easter stamp! I wasn't intending to share it on my blog, then this afternoon I saw that the Paper Players challenge this week is to create a CAS card with washi tape, so thought I would link up;

Here is my super-quick card:

I must confess that I am something of a hoarder of washi tape - I love to buy it, then struggle to use it! One thing it's great for though is adding detail to really quick cards, like this one: I simply took a plain piece of Melon mambo for my card base, added two strips of Gingham Garden washi tape and then stamped the 'Eggstra Spectacular' stamp in pink, coloured with marker pens then popped up on a couple of dimensionals. As easy as that! I cut my washi tape with scissors as I wanted a straight edge, but it tears really easily and looks great with a torn edge too. I don't know why, but having come to edit my photo the pink washi tape doesn't look straight, but I can assure you it is - next time I'll go with something more random!

Back tomorrow with another card; until then, happy stampin'!

Scalloped Tag Topper Punch Easter Egg Box

by Joanne James3. April 2014 21:03

Evening everyone! I promised you a special project today and here it is! Several months ago Stampin' Up! asked me if I would create an Easter box for a magazine commission and that magazine hits the shelves of the newsagents today! The box I created for Stampin' Up! is featured in the April 2014 issue of Prima Baby and Parenting and is part of an extended feature on Easter Family Fun - great things to make and do with your family this Easter. There are cute cakes and biscuits to bake and this fabulous Easter egg box to make:

Here's another shot from a different angle showing a close up of the tag, stamped with the egg from the 'Eggstra Spectacular' stamp set:

Lastly the trio of boxes that the magazine used for the title page of the two-page spread:

Here is my photograph of the title page in the magazine itself - the facing page contains a step-by-step 'how to' tutorial showing how to make it:

The sides of the body of the finished box measures 2" x 2 1/2" which is perfect for a small Easter egg (I used the ones you can buy in packs for Easter egg hunts) but this box could be used for anything small and attractive where you want to give a glimpse of the contents.  If you would like a copy of the tutorial you can see it in this month's Prima Baby magazine - if you live in Northampton, you'd better get to the shops quick though before I buy all the copies :-) I also made a short video tutorial showing you how I made this box - click the link below to watch it:

That's all from me today; back tomorrow with another project; happy stampin'!

Hardwood Meets Tulips

by Joanne James2. April 2014 17:22

Another quick post from me today before I head out for my second card class of the week with another of the cards that we are making, featuring the 'Blessed Easter' stamp. This time I paired the stamp with the Hardwood background - love this stamp, especially in Smoky Slate grey:

Unlike yesterday's card, I also used my Aquapainter to blend in some Smoky Slate ink around the tulips to create some subtle shading; shading in this way really makes the flowers stand out.

More lovely cards to share using this stamp in due course; off now to pack for my class.

Back tomorrow with another project - a rather special one too! until then, happy stampin!

Happy Easter CCMC295

by Joanne James25. March 2014 23:00

Good evening lovely blog readers - a quick post from me today as I've been out and had a full-on day today. I finally found the time to make a card for this week's challenge over at Create with Connie and Mary. They have a great design team with inspiring sketches and designs; this week it's a sketch challenge:

I decided to make an Easter card using the egg stamp from the Eggstra Spectacular stamp and designed a card that is entirely faithful to the sketch layout - here it is:

I made a 5" x 5" square card and using a piece of the lovely Watercolour Wonder DSP as my focal background and layered with some simple card stock strips, picking out the colours in the paper. I finished with an oval featuring the 'Happy Easter' stamp which I inked up with my Stampin' Write Markers in the same 3 colours as my paper strips. I inset this oval inside a larger one in Tangerine Tango as opposed to mounting it onto a base layer, as I wanted the oval to sit flat across the strips underneath. Here's a close up:

Hope you like today's card; back tomorrow with another project. Until then, happy stampin'!

Spring Banner Class

by Joanne James23. March 2014 18:16

This morning I held one of my weekend project classes. They generally last longer than my monthly card classes and are a great opportunity to do something different and a little more involved. Following a successful class last December to make festive Christmas banners (you can read more about that and see our wonderful creations here), at the request of a few of the ladies who attended I decided to hold one to make a Spring/Easter banner with the other half of our banner kits. I chose a colour scheme that would compliment that of the Burlaps and Blooms wreaths that several of us made at my last weekend project class - you can see my finished wreath here. So here is my completed banner:

I chose to feature the word 'Spring' on my banner, as I am intending to leave it up to decorate for a while, but some of the ladies in my class made one that featured the word 'Easter'. We stencilled our backgrounds and letters using the now retired Build a Banner stencil kit in Daffodil Delight, Tangerine Tango and Pool Party with lettering in Smoky Slate.

The banner is decorated with flowers made with the Spiral Flower Originals Die and punched and die-cut butterflies. Here are some close ups of the individual banner pieces - this is the first piece, with a layered butterfly with a lightly embossed layer and some tiny ones punched out with the Itty Bitty Butterfly punch:

Here's a close-up of one of the letters, along with a couple of the spiral flowers; a single yellow flower and a two-tone blue flower, finished with some Smoky Slate leaves cut out with the Secret Garden framelits:

This one has a So Saffron single flower and a two-tone one in Tangerine Tango and Crisp Cantaloupe, finished with an extra-large pearl, along with a bitty blue butterfly:

My banner simply served as inspiration and as is often the way with this kind of class, everyone makes theirs slightly differently and adds their own unique touch. If you hop on over to my Facebook page, you will be able to see the finished banner that Julie, one of the lovely ladies who attended the class made - different to mine, yet equally gorgeous!

If you live in Northampton and would like to join any of my card or project classes, check out my schedule of forthcoming classes here or contact me for more information.

Back tomorrow with a card to share; until then, happy stampin'!

Video Tutorial 4: Make Any Size Box Using Your Envelope Punch Board and Box Buster from The Crafty Owl

by Joanne James11. March 2014 15:13

Firstly, thank you to everyone who has left comments on my blog, Facebook page, youTube channel or emailed me in person with comments and praise for my new Box Buster tool - I am genuinely touched that you have gone out of your way to share with me what a great tool you think this is and I'm delighted to be able to share it with you. Today I'm back with another video tutorial showing you a different box that you can make using your Envelope Punch Board - an open topped Easter bunny treat box - made using paper from the lovely Fresh Prints Designer Series Paper stack:

Sometimes you want to be able to see the contents of your box and today's box is just perfect for that. It also means that when you're making your box out of such lovely double-sided designer paper, you get a lovely glimpse of the reverse side too:

I love the Fresh Prints DSP stack - these paper stacks are great for small boxes and perfect if you're a card maker; I always get through several of these each season! Today's boxes were made to fit the Malteser Easter bunnies that are currently on sale in store right now, but as always with the aid of my Box Buster tool you could adapt the same style box to fit any size contents, just by measuring them; Box Buster from The Crafty Owl will do all the hard work for you and tell you what size paper you need and where you should make your punch marks. So, without further ado, here's what you've all been waiting for - the link to today's video:

)

I hope you found the tutorial useful - there's lots more still to come! Don't forget - you can access the Box Buster tool via the button on the right hand side of my blog home page or simply by clicking here.

Back tomorrow with another project; until then, happy box making!

Hoppy Easter - Paper Craft Crew

by Joanne James4. March 2014 22:24

Good evening lovely readers! I have finished editing my next video tutorial but have bumped it to tomorrow so that I can fit in a quick card that I made for this week's Paper Craft Crew challenge. here is this week's sketch layout:

Here is the card I made using this layout:

I went with a 4" square card for a change and a Crumb Cake base, then took a strip of Whisper White that I lightly sponged in Soft Sky across the top with Wild Wasabi across the bottom, then stamped the bunny minus the sentiment in Chocolate Chip and coloured him with Crumb Cake ink and a blender pen, before adding a candy dot for his tail. I matted this section on a strip of Chocolate Chip and then added a fringe of Wild Wasabi to the front of the card to make it look like the bunny was hiding in the grass. The new fringe scissors are great for creating grass in an instant and add a lovely texture. I then finished by wrapping some Early Espresso baker's twine around my card and tying in a bow. I stamped the sentiment onto an oval of Crumb Cake cardstock and finished with two co-ordinating banners, stamped using the Banner Blast stamp set and punched out with the matching punch. Both of these items are available free with a spend of £45 or more during Sale-A-Bration - contact me or visit my online store if you would like to place a £45 order and receive these gifts for free.

I've had a busy day today so am off to bed for a well-earned rest; back tomorrow with the second in my 'Any Size' box tutorial series. Until then, happy stampin'!
